Axmouth is situated at the mouth of the river Axe, within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). We have a National Nature Reserve, two Sites of Special Scientific Interest and an outlook across the Axe Estuary to the Seaton Marshes and Colyford Common Local Nature Reserve.
The Village Centre has many pretty listed houses, some of which are traditionally thatched.
The two pubs, The Harbour Inn and the Ship Inn, both provide good beers and food.
The historical village church of St Michaels, is a grade 1 listed Norman building with ancient fresco wall paintings and an unusual double aisle.
Within the village there is a riverside campsite for touring caravans and tents.
There is a well equipped play park for the younger visitors to enjoy.
The Estuary is a haven for wildlife and ‘Coronation Corner’ is a popular spot for bird watchers to set up their telescopes, binoculars and cameras to catch sightings of some of our rarer bird visitors. There are also picnic benches for all to use whilst enjoying the view over the river. Looking across the estuary you will also see the colourful trams travelling silently along the riverside between Seaton and Colyton. A new Viewing Platform was officially opened at ‘Coronation Corner’ in July 2012 which is proving very popular with locals and visitors to the area. An interpretation board has also been installed at the Viewing Platform
The Harbour and Beach provide opportunities for boating, canoeing, rock pooling, fishing and line-crabbing, with the odd cup of tea and a bite to eat available at the Harbourside Café. This section of the beach is dog-friendly all the year round.
In the wider parish, sections of the South West Coast Path and the Jurassic Undercliff are accessible for either a pleasant stroll or a more robust hike for the more serious walker. The Undercliff route connects Axmouth with Lyme Regis and traverses an area which is steeped in flora and fauna, having a microclimate similar to a rainforest.
The parish also boasts the Axecliff Golf Club, (open to non-members) with superb sea views, the Axe Yacht Club, Westhayes static caravan park with an indoor pool, Pinewood holiday chalets with heated indoor and outdoor pools, Axmouth Football Club and Lower Bruckland Trout Fishery with a lakeside cafe.
Axmouth is situated on the A3172 east of Seaton and is close by the interesting villages of Beer and Branscombe and the larger regency towns of Lyme Regis and Sidmouth.
